All of our official RHIFF selection notices will go out via email during the week of April 16, 2006.
Happy Spring! We are so happy that today marks the first day of Spring! With more sun and increased energy, we are fast approaching many benchmarks at RHIFF. The final round of scoring is slated for the week of March 26-April 3rd. Notices of selection will go out the week of April 16, 2006.
With entry deadlines passed, the RHIFF committee left one more opportunity open to those reaching us from GOOGLE. March 15, 2006 will be the final remaining postmark date for your entries, providing you find us from GOOGLE and submit using a RHIFF entry form. Good Luck!
Last year our charity was directed to help one child. This year we chose a charity to help save and protect over 40,000 children...
Since we have increased our international awareness by over 38% in 2006, RHIFF has decided to donate funds to an international charity that needs everyone's attention. It's called the GULU WALK and the story of these 40,000+ children known as the "Night Commuters" living in rural northern Uganda in the city of Gulu is a horrific one. Please read below:
Re-printed courtesy of guluwalk.com
U.N. Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland has called the situation in northern Uganda “the world’s most neglected humanitarian crisis” and “one of the biggest scandals of our generation.”
The Night Commuters
Children are lucrative resources for the LRA rebels. The atrocities committed against these children are impossible to imagine: in captivity children as young as seven years old are tortured, beaten and raped. They are then forced to become rebel soldiers, sexual slaves, porters and laborers. Some are forced to kill, maim, beat or abduct innocent victims, including family members and neighbors, or to look on as these abuses are committed. Girls are used as domestic servants or forced into sexual slavery as LRA commanders’ ‘wives’. They are subject to rape, unwanted pregnancy and the risk of infection, including HIV/AIDS.
Child abduction is clearly a major security concern for northern Uganda. Desperately afraid of abduction, vulnerable children as young as four years old will walk from their homes or displacement camp to a large urban center every night.
These "night commuters" travel as far as 20km on a daily basis without any adult supervision subjecting them to a wide range of violence. They gather in schools, hospitals, district offices and NGO compounds - wherever they believe they can spend the night in safety. They settle to sleep in the open, where they are often abused and exploited.
A portion of ticket sales will be donated from the
2nd Annual ReelHeART International Film Festival, June 19-24, 2006.
To find out where you can walk, or how to get involved in other ways please visit the GULU WALK web site.

The 2nd Annual ReelHeART International Film Festival runs June 26-June 30, 2006. That's 2 whole extra days than our 2005 season. So get in your films!
At the ReelHeART International Film Festival, we’re proud of the fact that we program with a focus not on time, but on content. To get that ‘rich content’ on film takes great skill, concentration and determination, what we here at RHIFF call HeART. Often the discussion comes up on the subject of what pushes a film forward in the screening process.
We know the story is vital. But we also know it’s the production standards that makes the story jump “from the page to the stage” (so to speak). Yes, a film wouldn’t be realized if your actors or documentary subjects did not come across on camera, but lets say that’s a given. We feel there's a more technical aspect that's fundamental to good film making.
Sound and editing are two of the most critical and creative aspects of filmmaking. Both of these determine the emotional spine and narrative impact that was originally intended by the director.
While every element of filmmaking is essential to the finished product of a film or documentary, sound and editing really makes or breaks the finished product as a whole. With this in mind, the ReelHeART International Film Festival has decided to add 2 New Award Categories to our 2006 season.
The RHIFF is excited to announce that 2006 will be honoring these achievements and that all competition films are eligible for these awards.
