October 01, 2007 - Nuit Blanche Update #1
We had a great time at ReelHeART Screening Area in ZONE B of the Nuit Blanche Guide this past Saturday.
Our 3 Tier event brought in music, art and film lovers and plain curiosity seekers from all over the core of Toronto from 7:01PM-7:00AM.
Other places had hookers listed as ‘performance artists” giving kisses for 50 cents but we decided to be ‘purists’ and deliver the artsy goods to the city of Toronto.
While ACA Gallery (our partner) had people of all ages making bookmarks for our charity in Afghanistan, where we help build libraries for young girls and women, another aspect of our event was the NFB and their ’speakers corners’ complete with kind of a folksy band to bring people in.
The diamond of the night (even if we are biased) was the ReelHeART Screening Area with our BIG screen and BIG sound.
We made sure our films were for everyone to area homeless people to whom we gave out snacks and water, to young and old alike who love film.
It was a lovely evening. No rain. No humidity. We screened 30+ films at a ratio of 22′ x 16′ on an exterior white brick wall. All films looked GEORGEOUS and CRISPLY FOCUSED and sounded CLEAR AND BALANCED and BEAUTIFUL.
We also screened a new short doc created especially for the event, on how Art Can Change The World.
It was great to hear big laughs for the dark musical comedy “I Love, I’m Sorry I’ll Never Do It Again” as well as “Run”, a film by Nathan Brunskil. Other audience faves included the hold your breath until the end “Absolute Zero” by Austalia’s Alan Woodruff, “Highway Amazon” and the mesmerizing “Pillow Girl” by Colorado’s Ronnie Cramer.
On the animated front faves were “One”, by California filmmaker Chris Potter and Fission by Taiwanese director Kun-I Chang.
Drama faves included “Dos Sombras” by Polish director Pawel Kloc and La Sortie by Joel Franka from Belgium.
Music video “Gansta Knitta” got big laughs from the crowd and looked just crazy on the big screen, while “Slowly Surfacing: Quite Music For Quiet People” by Australia’s Shahane Bekarian looked sumptuous to say the least…
Our surprize guest of the evening was California director Mark Bonn and his co-producer (and lovely wife) Christine Bonn, who were present for a screening of their engaging documentary “In Times Of War: The Ray Parker Story”. We lead into that doc, by playing John Ponton’s “Ode To Peace and Love” a Music Video geared to American Soldiers. We’ll be publishing a full list of films screened later on this week with more updates and pictures, so stay tuned!
