What is the opposite of American Idol?
A television program exists on a public access channel in Central New Jersey called Cafe Improv.
This program offers no judges, no slick productions, no paid staff, no prizes, no promises of financial rewards, and no dreams of making a career in music. In this place, the dream of ‘being discovered’ has been proved completely impossible and illusory. What we are left with is the raw emotion of expression from performers who can’t stop performing. The songs of musicians who have proved their commitment to their music by the labors of its very existence. JackStock is the emotional story of a superstar of this artistic phenomena that could not be stopped by the indifference of a soul-less culture.

Belonging
Director, Tariq Nasir, Jordan
The wars of 1948 and 1967 changed the lives of Palestinian families forever. ‘Belonging’ is a film about the shared history of one family, emphasizing the destructive experience of war and its after effects. It’s not a story of blame and bitterness, but a human story; one of displacement and loss, a story of longing and belonging. This is a documentary about deep-rooted attachment to one’s land, the loss of an ancestral home, and the experience of being made refugees, as told by the surviving family members across two generations, and two different continents. It is also a look at the issue of identity, and how being caught in a war is a bad thing regardless of where you were born, or where you belong.
Kitka and Davka in Concert:
Old and New World Jewish Music
Director, Ashley James, USA
Kitka and Davka in Concert: Old and New World Jewish Music brings thirteen exceptional musicians and vocalists to the screen in a spectacular performance of Jewish Music recorded live at Oakland, California’s Temple Sinai. The program has been shown on many PBS stations November and December, 2006 with numerous others planning to broadcast it at a future date. ‘Culture and music can transcend the boundaries between religions. That’s something that we really need for coexistence,” states producer, Leonard Kurz. “The program, featuring two extremely popular Bay Area world music ensembles, along with special guest Stephen Saxon on vocals and trumpet, is a tremendous testament to that belief.”
