Special Report by GG Gianfranco

This week, starting March 01, 2008, the notifications begin for filmmakers for the ReelHeART International Film Festival (RHIFF)ReelHeART Opening Party 2007.

ReelHeART runs its 4th season June 16-21 in Toronto, Canada, screening 100+ films submitted from over 35 countries. This season their are 9 categories of competition for films ranging from Music Video, Animation, Experimental, Dance, or Music Related, Short or Long Form Documentary, Short or Long Form Film, Feature Documentary, and Feature Films.

A new category was introduced this season called “Off the Shelf”, for films that are 5 years or older. This category was initiated to “breath new life into overlooked films”, says ReelHeART Director, Shannonn Kelly. She goes on to explain, “Every season, during our pre-submission research, we were finding great films and documentaries that had never really seen the light of day. We wanted to give those films some more exposure and hopefully give their filmmaker another shot at finding either a new audience or distribution interest.”

Another category of competition is the ReelHeART Screenplay Competition, which was launched in 2007, to great success. This year is “bigger and better”, according to Kelly, “last year two of the top 3 screenplays were so vastly different yet were submitted by the same writer! It was a fun kind of drama befitting our screenplay category; so I think we might have some more interesting developments this year. I think other writers were hoping to meet that challenge this season, because we had a few multiple submissions this year as well. I’m looking forward to it.” Announcements for this category begin at the end of March.

With 6 days of parties, a “Lunch n Learn” series with film industry professionals and filmmakers, dinners, daily meet and greets, late night networking and of course films, the ReelHeART International Film Festival (RHIFF) has the feel of a “filmmakers boot camp”, says Carl Liberman, literary agent of The Characters Talent Agency where both audience members and filmmakers get down to the business of making films and are having a ton of fun while they’re doing it.

Advance online ticket sales for ReelHeART begin April 15, 2008.

ReelHeART Says Happy Valentine Day!Have a great day and love yourself

Jan 09

We end our submission season January 15, 2008, so I wanted to publish a note to filmmakers and screenwriters all over the world that have been submitting to ReelHeART International Film Festival (RHIFF).

We have an exceptional bunch of screeners this year. They are tough, fair and extremely well versed in film. Their enthusiasm for films coming to ReelHeART is clearly evidenced in each scorecard they turn in. Whether they love your film or hate your film, rest assured, our screeners are watching and studying your films and giving them the attention they deserve.

The overall quality of films this year again has hit a benchmark and is up at least another 10% in scoring round quality. We have you, the Filmmaker to Thank.

Screenplay submissions are up way beyond last season as well, the number of screenplays short listed.

The screenplay competition was such fun and a great success in our inaugural season that word must’ve spread as we had hoped. However, a little web campaigning didn’t hurt either.

We also had the pleasure of articles written by our 2nd Place ReelHeART Screenplay Competition Winner Jason Coleman (WILLING), who, on his own initiative graciously covered and wrote about his experiences while at ReelHeART 2007, that added to the web interest for the ReelHeART Screenplay Competition.

Jason’s articles are published below for your reading convenience-

I want to say Thank You to all the hardworking men and women, established and student filmmakers who dedicate much of their lives, resources, bank accounts and creative spirit to making film and writing screenplays.

On behalf of the ReelHeART Team, I want to extend much Good Luck to all entrants.

Thank you for choosing ReelHeART!

October 01, 2007 - Nuit Blanche Update #1

We had a great time at ReelHeART Screening Area in ZONE B of the Nuit Blanche Guide this past Saturday.

Our 3 Tier event brought in music, art and film lovers and plain curiosity seekers from all over the core of Toronto from 7:01PM-7:00AM.

Other places had hookers listed as ‘performance artists” giving kisses for 50 cents but we decided to be ‘purists’ and deliver the artsy goods to the city of Toronto.

While ACA Gallery (our partner) had people of all ages making bookmarks for our charity in Afghanistan, where we help build libraries for young girls and women, another aspect of our event was the NFB and their ’speakers corners’ complete with kind of a folksy band to bring people in.

The diamond of the night (even if we are biased) was the ReelHeART Screening Area with our BIG screen and BIG sound.

We made sure our films were for everyone to area homeless people to whom we gave out snacks and water, to young and old alike who love film.

It was a lovely evening. No rain. No humidity. We screened 30+ films at a ratio of 22′ x 16′ on an exterior white brick wall. All films looked GEORGEOUS and CRISPLY FOCUSED and sounded CLEAR AND BALANCED and BEAUTIFUL.

We also screened a new short doc created especially for the event, on how Art Can Change The World.

It was great to hear big laughs for the dark musical comedy “I Love, I’m Sorry I’ll Never Do It Again” as well as “Run”, a film by Nathan Brunskil. Other audience faves included the hold your breath until the end “Absolute Zero” by Austalia’s Alan Woodruff, “Highway Amazon” and the mesmerizing “Pillow Girl” by Colorado’s Ronnie Cramer.

On the animated front faves were “One”, by California filmmaker Chris Potter and Fission by Taiwanese director Kun-I Chang.

Drama faves included “Dos Sombras” by Polish director Pawel Kloc and La Sortie by Joel Franka from Belgium.

Music video “Gansta Knitta” got big laughs from the crowd and looked just crazy on the big screen, while “Slowly Surfacing: Quite Music For Quiet People” by Australia’s Shahane Bekarian looked sumptuous to say the least…

Our surprize guest of the evening was California director Mark Bonn and his co-producer (and lovely wife) Christine Bonn, who were present for a screening of their engaging documentary “In Times Of War: The Ray Parker Story”. We lead into that doc, by playing John Ponton’s “Ode To Peace and Love” a Music Video geared to American Soldiers. We’ll be publishing a full list of films screened later on this week with more updates and pictures, so stay tuned!
