$200 Canadian Film Stuffed Into Sundance Swag!
By Shannonn Kelly
YouTube’s Project Direct has made two Canadian filmmakers very happy. They have a film at Sundance and it’s not even screening anywhere…!
Jason Gosbee, 25 and Ben Goldenberg, 26, came up with "White Collar Criminals", a short film about a group of Toronto bank robbers, for a film contest called Project Direct on YouTube, .
Their film is now on a DVD and included in every Swag Bag in Sundance this week.
Project Direct had an international call to filmmakers from the USA, the UK, Canada, Italy, Brazil, Spain and France. Filmmakers had to submit original films to the contest website in December, keeping a few basic contest requirements in mind.
Each film had to be five minutes or less, and had the dialogue had to be English or provide English subtitles. Also, to be eligible, each film had to include props such as a red telephone as well as any two props from a list of props listed on the official contest website.
The filmmakers of "White Collar Criminals," chose to include thick-rimmed glasses, a videotape, a skateboard and a severed ear.
Gosbee and Goldenberg took the maximum time allowed to tell their story. Gosbeee says, ‘It’s hard to really tie up intricate and amazing storylines with (only) five minutes, but we took the idea of four bank robbers who were trying to escape the police, But the way that they do it is by throwing you off, disguising themselves as something that they’re not."
Adding drama to their story, Goldenberg and Gosbee submitted their film with only two minutes to spare before the deadline, "White Collar Criminals" came in 2nd in the contest. And since the film hit the Internet, it has now been viewed more than 185,000 times.
"In two weeks, I think it was 180,000 views," Gosbee told Canada AM. When I last looked the current Views: 188,375
Goldenberg and Gosbee won a $2,500 prize and the opportunity to have their film included in the swag bags at the Sundance Film Festival, which kicks off in Park City, Utah.
"We were told that every executive, every celebrity and every guest that goes into any event party at Sundance is going to have our video on a DVD," Gosbee said.
