American Idol Was No “GlamSlide”…

As we all know now, American Idol was no “GlamSlide”. adamlAdam Lambert was knocked off by the red-state voters who made Kris Allen (a guy with no “guyliner”) the new reigning King of American Idol Season 8.

Show producers pulled out all the stops Wednesday night during the Season 8 final results show of American Idol.

Lil Rounds sang (poorly) with Queen Latifah. I still don’t know who Lil Rounds is or what genre she’ll most suited to. Just because she appears to be a certain type, doesn’t mean she is a certain type.

Jason Mraz mixed it up with Alexis whom I like and Anoop, whom I dislike. I absolutely HATED every performance by “Anoop Dawg”. (Anoop, are you trying to be the next Al B. Sure? cuz it ain’t workin’…)

I have to give it up for the Kris Allen duet with Keith Urban. Their harmonies were great. They had an obvious rapport with each other and Keith looked healthy and hot!

The girls from the Top 13 sang “Glamourous” with Fergie. And damn if Fergie wasn’t super hot too! Fergie sang a solo and looked uber-hot in her long dark locks and crazy Germanesque outfit. She then came back to smash it up some more with the boys from Black Eyed Peas. And got censored! For what? Being too hot….?

Cyndi Lauper sang with my 4th favorite idol, just turned 17 year old, Allison Iraheta.

Longtime favorite and 3rd place finisher Danny Gokey teamed up with Lionel Richie. Danny, often teased for his simultaneous singing and dancing abilities, ripped a few moves from the “All Night Long” video, just for fun. But I would’ve LOVED a little Brick House by Adam Lambert a’la his YouTube sexy romp on I Make You Crazy. I think that would have been the song that would’ve shocked the red staters fer sure. “Aow, He’s a Brick House!”

Next up was Adam though, in a kooky Joan Crawford if-she-were-goth-shoulder-padded jacket and platform boots singing “Beth”, which I found out later was a Kiss song. But I had to research to find out that:

“Beth” is a song by Kiss, originally released on their 1976 album, Destroyer. To date, it is their highest-charting single, reaching #7 on Billboard’s American charts”…

Who knew.

It was weird and crazy at that point because Adam was in and out of his element at the same time. Someone didn’t block that rehearsal very well, because Adam was 10 feet away from the stage behind Kiss, belting out his “Glambert” wails as though he was right on my doorstep. You could definitely hear him behind all that hot mess they call Kiss.

Carlos Santana was surrounded by the Top 13 on his “Black Magic Woman”. It was nice to finally see Jorge mix in his flavor on this tune. It would’ve been cool to get Latino y Latina action with co-solos by Jorge and Allison with Mr. Santana though. Again, an oversight from rehearsals and show producers. Hello — Hispanics, 51% of America-!

There was a number by Steve Martin (yes, the comedian) an avid banjo player for over 40 years,  who brought in his homey bluegrass band to pluck along to his recently penned tune “Pretty Flowers” from his new album, The Crow: New Songs for the Five-Sting Banjo (Rounder) sung by the beautiful but quirky song-stylist Megan Joy, and solid Michael “Mellencamp” Sarver. Professional critics and blog commentators alike didn’t know what to make of this number at all. They were expecting Steve to be funny. Hey people, he’s not a performing monkey-

The top 13 male contestants performed  in a rather awkward dance number to “Do You Think I’m Sexy” and then were met by Rod my-hair-is-still-from-the-80s Stewart.

Finally,  Adam and Kris joined Queen, singing “We Are the Champions” and even though it’s not my thing, I thought the two finalists did a pretty good job and appeared to have fun on that number. I don’t know who the guitarist is for Queen, but he made a point of shaking Adam’s hand after the performance.

(Is that another possibility for Adam? Singing for Queen? Sorry red states, didn’t mean to make you blow beer through your nose, by saying “Queen” and Adam’s name in the same sentence.)

When Ryan announced the winner, I was prepared to hear Kris’s name. I called it in my Blog the day before. So, there was no shreiking from me except, “I called it in my Blog. I called it in my Blog!”

Kris was shocked. But not so much as the “Glambert” fans and Simon Cowell who could not hide his dismay. Simon knows superstar when he sees it.

However, Kris was obviously genuine when he said, “Adam deserves it.” Adam, forever the cool kid smiled big for his competitor Kris. That was also genuine and sincere.

Adam was the winner overall Wednesday night. First of all, he didn’t have to sing that horrendous anthem co-penned by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. That was a win right there. But Adam did more than that. He won our hearts in his daring to be different.

Thank you Adam Lambert…
